Lipoedema surgery in Bochum
Liposuction for fat distribution disorders
Lipoedema is a chronic fat distribution disorder that mainly occurs in women. It is characterised by a symmetrical accumulation of fat on the legs and arms, often accompanied by pain, swelling and bruising. Lipoedema surgery, also known as liposuction, can be an effective treatment option.
What is lipoedema?
Lipoedema is an often misunderstood disease. It leads to a disproportionate accumulation of fat in certain areas of the body, typically the legs and arms, and causes considerable discomfort and aesthetic impairment. The exact cause of lipoedema is still unknown, but hormonal and genetic factors are thought to play a role.
Symptoms of lipoedema
- Symmetrical fat accumulation on legs and arms
- Sensitivity and pain in the affected area
- Slight tendency to bruise
- Swelling that worsens during the day
- Reduced mobility and quality of life
Diagnosis of lipoedema
The diagnosis of lipoedema is usually made by a thorough clinical examination of the patient. An experienced doctor will consider the patient's symptoms and medical history. Additional examinations such as ultrasound or MRI can help to rule out other diseases.
Treatment options
Lipoedema cannot be cured, but it can be treated effectively. Non-surgical treatment options include
- Compression therapy: Wearing compression garments can help to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
- Manual lymphatic drainage: This special form of massage can reduce swelling and improve lymph flow.
- Diet and exercise: A healthy diet and regular physical activity can help to improve overall wellbeing.
Lipoedema surgery
Lipoedema surgery, also known as liposuction, is the only treatment method that enables a permanent reduction in abnormal fatty tissue. During this operation, the excess fatty tissue is suctioned out through small incisions and special cannulas.
Preparation for lipoedema surgery
Before the operation, a detailed consultation and examination is carried out by an experienced surgeon. It is important to discuss all questions and concerns and to be thoroughly informed about the procedure. The patient should be in good general health and have realistic expectations of the results.
The operation or surgery
Liposuction is usually performed under general or local anaesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes small incisions in the skin and inserts thin cannulas to suction out the excess fatty tissue. The procedure can take several hours, depending on the extent of the treatment and the areas of the body affected.
After the operation
After the operation, it is important to follow the surgeon's instructions exactly. Compression garments usually need to be worn for several weeks to reduce swelling and promote healing. Painkillers and antibiotics may be prescribed to relieve pain and prevent infection.
Risks and complications of liposuction
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and possible complications with liposuction. These include
- Infections
- Bleeding
- Asymmetry
- Skin irregularities
- Thrombosis
It is important to be aware of these risks and choose an experienced surgeon to minimise the risk of complications.
Long-term results and aftercare
The results of lipoedema surgery are usually permanent, provided that the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle. Regular follow-up appointments with the surgeon are important to monitor the healing process and ensure that no complications occur.
Difference between liposuction and lipoedema surgery
Procedure for removing excess fatty tissue from various areas of the body such as the abdomen, hips, thighs and arms. The primary goal here is the aesthetic improvement of body contours.
In contrast, lipoedema surgery is specifically designed to relieve the symptoms of lipoedema, a chronic condition characterised by an abnormal accumulation of fatty tissue, particularly in the legs and arms. Lipoedema is often painful and can lead to significant restrictions in movement.
Lipoedema surgery also uses the technique of liposuction to remove the abnormal fatty tissue. However, the main aim is to improve the patient's quality of life and reduce the discomfort associated with lipoedema.
To summarise, the main difference is that liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, whereas lipoedema surgery is a medically necessary measure to alleviate a specific condition.
Conclusion on lipoedema surgery
Lipoedema surgery can be an effective solution for those who suffer from the symptoms of lipoedema and do not find sufficient relief from non-surgical treatments.
Is the operation covered by health insurance?
The reimbursement of costs for lipoedema surgery by health insurance companies depends on various factors. The first data from a study by the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) is currently being analysed. A decision is expected to be made in mid-2025.
According to current regulations, costs may be covered in individual cases in severe cases (stage III). Comprehensive documentation is required to prove the level of suffering and the medical necessity of the operation. Patients must prove that previous conservative therapy such as lymphatic drainage, exercise therapy and compression therapy were not sufficient.
Doctors who wish to perform liposuction for stage III lipoedema also require a licence for outpatient surgery in accordance with §135 paragraph 2 SGB V.
