Lipoma removal
Removal of a lipoma by a specialist

What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign tumour consisting of fatty tissue. These growths often occur under the skin and can be found in various parts of the body. Lipomas are usually soft, mobile and painless. Although they are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause pain or be aesthetically disturbing, so removal is considered.

Reasons for the removal of a lipoma

There are several reasons why people decide to have a lipoma removed:

  • Aesthetic reasons: If the lipoma grows in a visible place and is perceived as unattractive.
  • Pain: In rare cases, a lipoma can press on nerves or other structures and cause pain.
  • Size: Large lipomas can restrict the range of movement or be disturbing.
  • Uncertainty about the tumour: Although lipomas are benign, it can be reassuring to analyse the tumour tissue to ensure that it is not a malignant growth.

Preparations for removal

Before surgical removal, the doctor will carry out a thorough examination to ensure that the lipoma can be removed. This includes

  • Medical history: Taking the medical history and symptoms.
  • Physical examination: Palpation of the lipoma and assessment of its size and location.
  • Imaging procedures: Ultrasound or MRI may be required to determine the exact location and extent of the lipoma.

Procedure for removing a lipoma

There are various methods for removing a lipoma, depending on the size, location and preferences of the patient:

Surgical removal

The most common method of removing a lipoma is surgical excision. The lipoma is removed under local anaesthetic or, in the case of larger lipomas, under general anaesthetic. The surgeon makes a small incision over the lipoma and carefully removes it. The wound is then sutured.

Liposuction

In some cases, liposuction can be used to remove the lipoma. This is particularly helpful for larger lipomas or those in hard-to-reach areas. A thin cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue and the lipoma is suctioned out.

One advantage of this method: It leaves smaller scars than surgical removal.

Minimally invasive techniques

Newer techniques such as endoscopy can be used to remove lipomas with minimal invasiveness. These procedures are less traumatic for the surrounding tissue and have a shorter recovery time.

Aftercare and recovery time

After the removal of a lipoma, good aftercare is important to avoid complications and ensure a speedy recovery.

  • Wound care: The wound should be kept clean and dry. The doctor will give instructions on how to care for the wound and possibly on the use of dressings or ointments.
  • Pain management: Mild pain may occur after the operation, which can be treated with painkillers and cooling.
  • Monitoring: Regular check-ups with the doctor to monitor the healing process and ensure that no complications occur.
  • Activity restriction: Avoidance of physical exertion and pressure on the wound for a few days or weeks, depending on the extent of the operation.

Risks and complications

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications when removing a lipoma:

  • Infections
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Recurrence of the lipoma
  • Damage to surrounding tissue

It is important to discuss possible risks and follow all aftercare instructions carefully.

Conclusion on lipoma removal

The removal of a lipoma is a relatively simple and safe procedure that can be performed for various reasons. With the appropriate preparations and good aftercare, this procedure can be performed successfully and with minimal complications.

Note on billing

If a lipoma is removed for aesthetic reasons, the costs must be paid privately.

We can only realise the removal for self-paying or private patients. As we are a private practice, we cannot bill statutory health insurance companies.
