The removal of bags under the eyes, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce or remove the bags under the eyes. These bags under the eyes are caused by age-related changes in the skin, muscles and fatty tissue and are often congenital. They can make the face appear tired and older. Blepharoplasty is one of the most common aesthetic operations and is performed for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

What are bags under the eyes?

Bags under the eyes are swellings or accumulations of fat and fluid tissue under the eyes. They are caused by age-related changes in the skin, muscles and fatty tissue. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity and firmness, allowing the underlying fatty tissue to shift and accumulate. These changes make the face appear tired and older. Bags under the eyes can be treated for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

What are the causes of bags under the eyes?

There are several causes for the development of bags under the eyes. The most common include

  • Ageing process and skin ageing: With increasing age, the skin loses elasticity and firmness, which can cause the underlying fatty tissue to shift and accumulate.
  • Genetic predisposition: Some people are more prone to developing bags under the eyes due to their genetic predisposition.
  • Lifestyle factors: Lack of sleep, stress, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to the development of bags under the eyes.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions can cause swelling and fluid accumulation under the eyes.
  • Diet: An unbalanced diet, especially one with a high salt content, can favour water retention.
  • Other diseases
  •

What methods of treatment are available?

Surgical method

The surgical method is most commonly used. An incision is made on the lower eyelid margin (outside or inside), with subsequent removal or redistribution of fat and possibly skin tightening. The result is permanent.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment (often referred to as eyelid correction without surgery) sounds very favourable at first. However, there are also disadvantages:

  • Risk of pigment changes in the treatment area
  • Repeat treatments may be necessary
  • If fat cells are responsible for the optical effect, laser treatment is not enough
  • Side effects such as burns, etc. possible
  • In more pronounced cases, the expected results are not satisfactory in our view

Treatment with fillers

Fillers do not achieve a lasting result and can even favour puffiness in the lower eyelid area.

Preliminary medical examinations

We will carry out various medical examinations to ensure that you are suitable for the operation. These include blood tests, an eye examination and possibly a referral to an ophthalmologist for further assessment.

Planning the operation

As part of our individual consultation, we will explain your individual surgical plan, including the anaesthesia, the procedure and aftercare.

You will be given specific instructions on how to prepare for the operation, such as taking or stopping certain medication, fasting before the operation and organising someone to accompany you home after the procedure.

The surgical procedure itself

Blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthesia and sedation or under general anaesthesia. The choice of anaesthesia depends on the complexity of the procedure and your personal preferences.

How is the incision made?

We place the incisions along the natural skin folds or the inner side of the lower eyelid so that we minimise visible scars. Through these incisions, excess fatty tissue, skin and sometimes muscle tissue are removed or repositioned.

Once the incisions have been made, we remove the excess fatty tissue that causes the bags under the eyes. If necessary, excess skin is also removed to achieve a firmer and smoother appearance. The wounds are closed with fine sutures.

After the operation

Recovery and aftercare

After the operation, careful aftercare is crucial for healing and the final result. You will be given detailed instructions on wound care, avoiding physical exertion and applying cold compresses to reduce swelling.

Pain and swelling

It is normal to experience pain, swelling and bruising after the operation. We will prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication to alleviate this discomfort. The swelling and bruising should subside within one to two weeks.

Long-term results

The final results of blepharoplasty will only be visible after a few months, when healing is complete and the tissue has fully adapted. Most patients report a significant improvement in their appearance and self-confidence.

Risks and complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and possible complications associated with the removal of bags under the eyes. These can include

  • Infections
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry of the face
  • Problems with healing
  • Allergic reactions to anaesthesia

It is important to discuss all risks and follow all post-operative instructions carefully to avoid complications.
