How does vaginal dryness develop?

Vaginal dryness occurs when the mucous membrane of the vagina does not produce enough moisture. This can have various causes, such as hormonal changes. A lack of oestrogen is one of the most common causes. This is because oestrogen ensures that the vaginal mucosa remains moist, elastic and well supplied with blood. The female oestrogen balance is influenced by the menopause, childbirth or taking the contraceptive pill. Chemotherapy and other drug treatments (antihistamines, antidepressants, hormone blockers, blood pressure medication) also have an influence on this.

In addition to diseases in this area (such as recurring fungal infections), external factors such as smoking (which impairs blood circulation), excessive intimate hygiene and a lack of hydration can also have a negative effect on the moisture content of the vagina.

Causes of vaginal dryness briefly summarised:

  • Hormonal changes (e.g. menopause, breastfeeding)
  • Medication (antidepressants, antihistamines)
  • Stress, psychological strain
  • Excessive intimate hygiene
  • Smoking and an unhealthy lifestyle

What treatment options are there for vaginal dryness?

There are various treatment options for vaginal dryness, depending on the cause and personal preferences. Here is an overview:

Moisturising and nourishing products

  • Lubricating gels
  • Vaginal creams and gels (for daily care)
  • Vaginal suppositories (e.g. with hyaluronic acid or lactic acid)

These products have a symptomatic effect and provide temporary moisturisation without hormones.

Hormonal treatment

  • Vaginal creams, tablets or rings containing oestrogen
  • Systemic hormone therapy (HRT)
Only advisable for additional menopausal symptoms

Medical methods

  • Laser treatment
  • Radio frequency treatment

These methods have a longer-term effect and tackle the cause of the dryness without hormonal stress.

What are the benefits of radiofrequency treatment for vaginal dryness?

Radiofrequency (RF) treatments are increasingly being used as a treatment option for vaginal dryness, especially when hormonal treatments (e.g. oestrogens) are not an option or are not desired. Furthermore, it does not involve any surgical intervention or long downtime. You can return to your normal everyday activities immediately afterwards.

What happens during radiofrequency treatment for vaginal dryness?

The intravaginal radiofrequency method is non-hormonal and minimally invasive. Controlled thermal energy is emitted via a handpiece, which is similar in shape to a gynaecological ultrasound handpiece, to stimulate the tissue. This promotes collagen and elastin production, as the heat stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin.

This thickens the vaginal mucosa, making it more elastic and better moisturised. It also improves blood circulation, which significantly improves the natural production and supply of moisture to the mucous membrane.

What other advantages does RF treatment offer for vaginal dryness?

In addition to vaginal dryness, it can also relieve symptoms such as burning, itching and slight pain during sexual intercourse. This is because if the inside of the vagina is too dry, friction causes increased pain. The treatment is also much more effective than creams or gels (see results).

How long does treatment with radiofrequency for vaginal dryness take?

The treatment usually takes between 15 and 20 minutes and does not involve any downtime. No longer recovery periods are required.

Is treatment with radiofrequency energy painful?

The treatment is carried out without incisions or needles. No anaesthetic is required. Our patients usually report barely noticeable warmth, no pain and no downtime.

How long do the results last after treatment with RF for vaginal dryness?

A particular advantage of this method is that the result has a long-lasting effect for those affected. After a series of 3-5 sessions, the results can last for several months to over a year. However, this can vary depending on the patient.

What are the risks of the radiofrequency method for vaginal dryness?

Radiofrequency treatment for vaginal dryness is considered safe and gentle, but - like any medical treatment - involves certain risks and side effects. Redness, slight swelling, a slight burning sensation or a feeling of warmth in the genital area are temporary side effects that subside on their own in the first few days after treatment. Risks such as overheating of the tissue or infections are very rare, but possible - which is why treatment by experienced specialists in this particularly sensitive area is important. Infections caused by non-sterile working or open skin areas are also very rare and mainly occur if the treatment is not carried out correctly.

Is radiofrequency therapy also possible after cancer?

Yes, as the method is hormone-free, it is also suitable after cancer therapy, which can have a negative effect on the moisture content of the vagina. However, you should consult your doctor beforehand.

What else is the radiofrequency energy method suitable for in the vaginal area?

Positive side effects of this form of therapy are the improvement of mild stress incontinence, vaginal laxity or mild libido problems.

For this purpose, at our practice Dr Michaela Montanari also offers treatment with BTL EMSELLA as a pelvic floor treatment and incontinence treatment.
