Double chin
Causes & methods for removal

Chin correction without surgery
A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a common aesthetic concern caused by excess fatty tissue below the chin. It can affect a person's profile and alter the appearance of the face. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available to correct this problem.

Why does a double chin form? Possible causes

There are several factors that can contribute to the development of a double chin:

  • Genetics: The predisposition to fat accumulation under the chin can be hereditary.
  • Age: With increasing age, the skin loses its elasticity, which can lead to a double chin.
  • Weight gain: Excess weight can contribute to the accumulation of fatty tissue in the chin and neck area.
  • Attitude: Poor posture can weaken the muscles of the chin and neck, which favours a double chin.

How can a double chin be removed? Our treatment options

can vary according to cause and severity. Depending on the findings, treatment with or without surgery may be appropriate for you. We use the following methods:

Liposuction

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which excess fatty tissue is removed from under the chin. This method is effective and provides immediate results. A small cannula is used to suck out the fat. The recovery time is usually a few weeks.

Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis, also known as "CoolSculpting", is a non-invasive treatment in which fat cells are destroyed by exposure to cold. This method is painless and requires no downtime. Results can be seen within a few months of treatment.

Ultrasound therapy/Ultherapy

Ultrasound therapy uses high-intensity focussed ultrasound to target and destroy fat cells under the chin and tighten the tissue. This method is non-invasive and has no downtime. Full results are visible after 4-6 months.

Injection lipolysis (fat removal injection)

Some exercises can help to strengthen the muscles of the chin and neck and improve the appearance of a double chin. These include chin lifts, jaw exercises and neck stretches. These exercises are easy to perform and can be integrated into everyday life - however, satisfactory results are rarely possible with pronounced fat deposits or excess skin.

Advantages and disadvantages of the treatments

Each treatment method has its own advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account.

Advantages

  • Liposuction: immediate and lasting results.
  • Cryolipolysis: Non-invasive and painless.
  • Ultrasound therapy: Targeted treatment and no downtime.
  • Injection lipolysis: No surgery required and minimal downtime.
  • Neck muscle exercises: Simple and inexpensive.

Disadvantages

  • Liposuction: Surgical procedure with risks and longer recovery time.
  • Cryolipolysis: Results are not immediately visible.
  • Ultrasound therapy: Possible temporary side effects such as redness and swelling. Results are not immediately visible.
  • Injection lipolysis: Results may take some time.
  • Neck muscle exercises: Require continuous execution, rarely effective with pronounced fat deposits or excess skin.

What if there is also excess skin?

If there is excess skin after the removal of a double chin, there are various options available to achieve a tighter and more aesthetic appearance. One option is skin tightening using radiofrequency therapy. This stimulates collagen production, resulting in firmer skin.

In some cases, surgical tightening may also be necessary, in which excess skin is removed. We will advise you during the preliminary examination and recommend the best method for you based on your individual needs.

Conclusion

There are various ways to treat a double chin - with and without surgery. We will examine the individual advantages and disadvantages of each method with you and will be happy to advise you on your options. The right measures can improve the appearance of the chin and neck and boost self-confidence.
