Treatment of hair loss with the PRP method
How the PRP method can help with hair loss

Table of contents
What is the PRP method?
The PRP method (platelet-rich plasma) is a modern treatment option for combating hair loss. This therapy utilises the natural regenerative properties of the patient's own blood by extracting a small amount of blood, processing it and then injecting it into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.
How does PRP work?
The PRP method works by first taking a small amount of blood and processing it in a centrifuge to obtain platelet-rich plasma with a high concentration of platelets and growth factors. The growth factors contained in the plasma stimulate the hair follicles and improve blood flow to the scalp.
The growth factors act as signalling proteins which, once released into the tissue, activate specific cells such as fibroblasts and stem cells by docking onto their cell surface receptors, thereby stimulating cell division (proliferation) and the formation of new cells in the tissue, which supports hair growth and can reduce further hair loss.
Who is the PRP method for hair loss suitable for?
PRP treatment can be recommended for women and men suffering from hair loss. It is particularly effective for:
- Mild to moderate, congenital (androgenetic) or diffuse hair loss
- Hereditary hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)
- Weak hair growth
- Hair loss after stressful phases of life or pregnancy and menopause
When is the method unsuitable?
The PRP method for treating hair loss is not suitable for people with blood clotting disorders, low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), chronic liver disease or active infections such as hepatitis, HIV or sepsis. The method is also not recommended for patients with cancer, autoimmune diseases, during pregnancy or when taking blood-thinning medication or immunosuppressants.
In addition, the PRP method is not effective in bald areas without intact hair roots or in cases of long-term baldness.
How does the treatment work?
Basically, the therapy consists of counselling, preliminary examination, treatment and healing.
The PRP treatment itself consists of several steps:
- Blood collection: A small amount of your blood is taken, similar to a normal blood test.
- Preparation: The blood is processed in a special centrifuge to obtain the platelet-rich plasma.
- Injection: The plasma is injected directly into the scalp using fine needles.
The entire treatment takes about 60-90 minutes.
What are the advantages of PRP?
The PRP method offers several advantages:
- Natural treatment without chemicals
- It is minimally invasive and does not require any surgical intervention, which minimises the risk and strain on the body
- Only the body's own components are used, which means that the risk of allergic reactions or rejection is very low
- The method can be used for various forms of hair loss, including hereditary, circular and diffuse hair loss
- Side effects are rare and usually only temporary, such as slight swelling or reddening of the scalp
- The treatment has shown a high success rate in studies and is suitable for both men and women
- Promotes hair growth and strengthens the hair follicles
- Improves the health of the scalp
Are there any side effects?
PRP treatment is considered safe because only the body's own material is used.
Nevertheless, mild side effects may occur, such as
- Redness or swelling at the injection sites
- Slight pain or sensitivity of the scalp
- Small bruises (haematomas)
These symptoms usually disappear within a few days.
How often is treatment necessary?
PRP therapy typically involves several sessions spread over a period of several months. Usually 3 to 4 treatments are recommended, followed by regular top-ups at intervals of a few months to ensure optimal results and to maintain them for a long time.
How does the healing process work and what should be considered after treatment?
- After a PRP treatment, there may be slight redness, swelling or a feeling of tightness, which usually subsides within hours to a few days.
- In the first 24 hours you should not wash your hair and avoid direct sunlight.
- Sometimes more hair falls out in the first few weeks as old hairs make way for new ones. Improvements can usually be seen after two to six months, often several treatments are necessary.
- The final results can be seen after six to twelve months.
- For a lasting effect, refresher treatments are advisable every six to twelve months.
What can you expect from PRP treatment?
PRP treatment for hair loss has proven to be an effective method for improving hair growth and significantly reducing hair loss. Many patients report a stronger hair structure and new hair growth after just a few treatments. Studies show an improvement in 80-90 % of those affected, especially if the treatment is utilised early.
Although results may vary, several sessions and top-up treatments are usually required. PRP therapy is not a permanent solution, but can promote hair growth for a period of several months to a year.
