An umbilical hernia is a defect of the abdomen wall muscles near the navel. This can be present since birth or can be developed later. Parts of the intestine can be caught in this fracture gap. This can lead to pain and other complications. A life-threatening peritonitis may occur. Therefore an umbilical hernia should be treated surgically.
The defect is closed with sutures through a skin incision in the navel border with expansion up and down. It is possible that it has to be secured with a plastic mesh or a kind of a tampon. That way the stability of the abdominal wall muscles is restored.
A wound drainage for 24 hours is possible with extensive findings. Within the first 2 weeks you must avoid physical strain.
