Gynecomastia (breast formation in men)
Assoziierte Begriffe:

An enlargement of male breasts may firstly be caused by an accumulation of fat. On the other hand also by an excessive growth of breast tissue which may be caused as a result of hormonal imbalance or by taking certain medicines. The imitation of a female breast can be a mental burden and activities like swimming are deliberately avoided.
Before any surgical treatment a clarification of the causes of the gynecomastia is essential to ensure that other, non-surgical therapeutic procedures are not necessary. A hormone study of the blood and an examination by an urologist is reasonable.
One-sided enlargements may indicate a tumor and should be treated immediately. A previous ultrasound examination may be necessary.
The aim of surgery is to shrink the enlarged male breast with a removal of fat and glandular tissue and so restore the natural contour of the male chest. In some cases a tightening of the skin coat can be useful e.g. around the nipple.
In pure fat a liposuction can correct the problems by gently removing the fatty tissue through a 4mm-puncture.
If excess glandular tissue is present in addition it is removed through a fine incision at the lower edge of the areola. The nipple and areola are retained. The glandular tissue is sent for an examination for a safe exclusion of a tumor which is essential for your safety.
The inserted drains are usually removed after 1-2 days. The thread generally dissolves itself and does not have to be removed.
After the surgery you have to wear a compression vest for a period of 6 weeks in order to promote a regression of the swelling and help the skin tightening and contouring. Any strenuous physical activity should be avoided during this period. The final result is seen earliest after 3 months.
A comprehensive explanation of the planned surgery and its risks are discussed during a detailed and individual consultation.
